Machine is hooked up but doesn't do its job

I hooked the machine up to my phone. It worked fine, after so many rings it switched to the message I put on it, and then the person left me a message. I got them (2) and then erased them. Since then, the phone just rings - message never comes on and thus I don't get any messages. What's going on? ...
